Pakistan, India to Clash in Historic Asia Cup 2025 Final Amid Tense Political Backdrop

Captains of both finalist teams pose for a photoshoot with the trophy a day before the final.

DUBAI – A historic showdown awaits cricket fans as arch-rivals Pakistan and India face off for the first time in an Asia Cup final tomorrow in Dubai. However, ongoing political tensions between the two nations may cast a shadow over the much-anticipated event, with reports suggesting that the traditional pre-final trophy photoshoot may not take place.

This marks the first-ever Asia Cup final between the two sides since the tournament’s inception in 1984, and the third meeting between the teams in this year’s edition. India remains undefeated so far, while Pakistan has fought its way back into contention despite earlier losses to their rivals.

Traditionally, captains of both finalist teams pose for a photoshoot with the trophy a day before the final. However, tournament organizers have confirmed that no such event is scheduled for today, citing “uncertain circumstances.” A final decision will be made tomorrow before the match. The absence of the ceremonial shoot highlights lingering hostilities between the two cricket boards following a controversial encounter earlier in the tournament.

During the September 14 group stage match in Dubai, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav refused to shake hands with Pakistani players after the match and dedicated India’s win to the victims of the Pahalgam attack, calling it a “gift to the Indian Army.” His remarks drew criticism from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which filed a formal complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), citing violations of the code of conduct. In response, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) lodged its own complaint over Pakistani batsman Sahibzada Farhan’s celebratory gestures and fast bowler Haris Rauf’s post-wicket behavior toward the crowd. The ICC penalized both Yadav and Rauf, fining them 30% of their match fees, while Farhan received an official warning.

India has dominated the tournament so far, remaining undefeated through the group stage and the Super Four round. Their most recent win came in a dramatic Super Over victory against Sri Lanka. Pakistan, meanwhile, recovered from two earlier defeats to India and secured wins against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to earn their place in the final. This final is not only historic in terms of Asia Cup records but also carries the emotional and political intensity that defines cricket between these two nations.

Indian players Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill have been key performers, with Sharma scoring 105 runs in two matches against Pakistan to become the tournament’s leading run-scorer. In the bowling department, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah have continued to challenge Pakistan’s batting lineup, with Yadav taking 19 wickets in 9 matches and Bumrah maintaining his consistency with 14 wickets in 14 games. On the Pakistani side, despite controversy, Sahibzada Farhan and Haris Rauf have been standout contributors. Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, is scheduled to address the media tonight at 7 PM PST.

With diplomatic tensions simmering and emotions running high, the Asia Cup 2025 final promises to be a fiercely competitive and closely watched contest. Whether or not the trophy photoshoot takes place, all eyes will be on Dubai as two cricketing giants meet in what may be one of the most emotionally charged finals in the tournament’s history.
