Rawalpindi: Today, Pakistan joins the global community in commemorating International Peacekeepers Day, paying tribute to the courageous men and women who have served in United Nations peacekeeping missions around the world.
As one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping, Pakistan currently has around 3,000 peacekeepers deployed in various missions, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Abyei, Central African Republic, Cyprus, Western Sahara, and Somalia. Since 1960, Pakistan has contributed an impressive 235,000 troops to 48 UN missions across 29 countries on almost every continent.
Pakistan takes great pride in its enduring commitment to UN peacekeeping. Pakistani peacekeepers have consistently demonstrated exceptional courage, professionalism, and dedication to promoting peace and stability in conflict-ridden regions. Tragically, 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, a testament to their unwavering commitment.
On this International Peacekeepers Day, Pakistan honors their service and sacrifice for the noble cause of global peace. The country remains steadfast in its support for the United Nations Uniform Gender Parity Strategy (UGPS), aimed at enhancing the representation of women in uniform. Pakistan also backs the Secretary-General’s Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) initiative, which seeks to improve the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations by enhancing their capacity, coherence, and responsiveness. Additionally, Pakistan advocates for initiatives to improve the safety and security of UN peacekeepers, particularly those serving in high-risk environments.
