Pakistan Embassy in Washington Marks Defence Day With Grand Ceremony

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Shazia Nayyar): The Embassy of Pakistan in Washington hosted a dignified ceremony on September 6 to commemorate Pakistan Defence Day (Youm-e-Difa), honouring the courage, resilience and sacrifices of the nation’s armed forces and martyrs.

The event was attended by a large gathering of Pakistani-Americans, diplomats, defence attachés, scholars, media representatives and distinguished guests from various walks of life, including diplomats from friendly countries.

The ceremony opened with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem of Pakistan. A special documentary was also screened, highlighting national unity, patriotism and the sacrifices made in defence of the country.

Defence Day is observed every year on September 6 to remember the bravery and sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces and people during the 1965 war, when Pakistan defended its territory against aggression.

Addressing the gathering, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, said Defence Day represents more than a historical milestone, describing it as a symbol of the nation’s determination, resilience and spirit of sacrifice.

He paid tribute to Pakistan’s martyrs and veterans, saying their sacrifices would continue to inspire future generations. He stressed that the nation would never forget those who gave their lives in defence of the homeland.

Ambassador Sheikh also praised overseas Pakistanis for their contribution to the country’s image abroad, describing them as important representatives of Pakistan and highlighting their role in promoting the country’s positive identity internationally.

He said Pakistan was continuing to contribute to the international community as a peaceful, responsible and progressive country. He further emphasised that national unity remains essential for Pakistan’s stability, development and prosperity.

During his address, the ambassador referred to Pakistan’s recent military achievements, including the events of May 2025, as well as the country’s continuing fight against terrorism. He also recalled the Battle of Chawinda, describing it as a major armoured confrontation in which Pakistani forces successfully resisted the enemy offensive.

Speaking about future challenges, Ambassador Sheikh said the nature of warfare was evolving and that economic strength would increasingly determine a country’s ability to protect its national interests. He stressed the need for Pakistan to prepare itself to compete and succeed on the economic front.

On Pakistan-US relations, he said ties between the two countries were strong and marked by cooperation across a range of areas.

The ceremony concluded with an atmosphere of patriotism and national pride, as participants reaffirmed their commitment to Pakistan’s security, development, peace and prosperity.
