World Mental Health Day: Focus on Workplace Well-being
ISLAMABAD, Oct 10 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing mental health services, particularly through the improvement of mental health facilities across the country.
In a message on World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10, President Zardari encouraged the nation to adopt healthier lifestyles, maintain strong connections with loved ones, and engage in regular physical activity to better manage stress and anxiety. He stressed that individual and collective efforts could help build a healthier nation.
This year’s theme, “Mental Health at Work,” underscores the importance of fostering work environments that prioritize mental well-being. Citing the World Health Organization’s data, President Zardari pointed out that nearly 60% of the global population is part of the workforce, making the need to address mental health in the workplace more pressing than ever.
The president highlighted that workplace harassment and poor conditions can negatively impact both workers’ mental health and overall productivity. He urged employers and stakeholders to create healthier, more supportive work environments to improve mental health and boost efficiency.
Zardari also spoke about Pakistan’s efforts to improve mental health services, including the launch of the National Mental Health Helpline (1166), which connects individuals with local treatment centers and support networks.
He further noted that Pakistan was the first country to develop a cost-benefit package for essential health services, incorporating mental health interventions at the primary healthcare and community levels. Other initiatives include the establishment of a National Task Force for Mental Health, which promotes mental well-being and advocates for better care for individuals with mental health disorders. Mental health education has also been integrated into the Lady Health Worker training curriculum to enhance early detection and intervention.
