Opposition Leader Umar Ayub Vows Legal Challenge Against ISI Phone Tapping Authorization

The controversial SRO has sparked widespread debate over privacy concerns and the balance between national security and civil liberties, with opposition figures gearing up for a legal battle to overturn the decision.

ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Umar Ayub, has denounced the government’s notification granting ISI authority to tap phone conversations under SRO 1005(I)/2024. Calling it a move akin to fascism, Ayub criticized the decision, asserting it undermines fundamental rights and poses a threat to democratic principles.

Ayub accused the government, led by Shahbaz Sharif, of granting excessive surveillance powers that could be misused to manipulate and intimidate politicians and media figures, including prominent names like Bilawal Bhutto, Asif Zardari, and Maryam Nawaz.

“I will challenge this unconstitutional notification in court through my lawyer, Dr. Babar Awan Sahib,” Ayub declared, highlighting his resolve to contest what he views as a blatant violation of constitutional rights.
