Night-Time Cough May Signal Serious Lung Disease, Health Expert Warns
Allergies are among the leading causes of asthma and night-time coughing
ISLAMABAD: A persistent cough, particularly at night, should not be dismissed as a minor health issue, as it could be an early sign of asthma, allergies, or other serious respiratory conditions, according to leading health expert Dr. Wasim Jamali.
Speaking on a television health program, Dr. Jamali discussed the causes, symptoms, and treatment of chronic cough, emphasizing that recurring or long-lasting coughs require medical attention rather than being ignored as a seasonal problem.
He explained that in some cases, especially among children, a prolonged cough may be caused by a foreign object lodged in the airway. Recalling a case from his medical experience, he said a child was treated for asthma and pneumonia for nearly 18 months before doctors discovered and removed a small piece of betel nut from the child’s respiratory tract, after which the cough completely disappeared.
Dr. Jamali noted that frequent coughing during the evening or night can be one of the earliest signs of asthma in children. He urged parents to take such symptoms seriously and seek timely medical advice.

According to the health expert, allergies are among the leading causes of asthma and night-time coughing. Common triggers include pet hair, cockroaches, dust, mites found in curtains and carpets, pollen, and certain foods, all of which can provoke allergic reactions and respiratory problems in sensitive individuals.
He further stressed that a patient’s medical history plays a crucial role in diagnosing the cause of a cough. Factors such as family history of allergies or asthma, environmental conditions, and food sensitivities can help doctors identify underlying health issues.
Dr. Jamali advised parents to consult a healthcare professional if a child experiences recurring coughs, worsening symptoms at night, or a cough that persists for an extended period, warning that early diagnosis can help prevent serious complications.
