Nicaragua Breaks Diplomatic Relations with Israel Amid Gaza Conflict
Government labels Israeli actions as "fascist" and "genocidal" in a bold statement.
Nicaragua announced on Friday that it is severing diplomatic ties with Israel, accusing the Israeli government of being “fascist” and “genocidal.”
In a statement, the Nicaraguan government explained that the decision was driven by Israel’s military actions in Palestinian territories. Earlier in the day, the country’s congress had approved a resolution urging the government to act in alignment with the upcoming one-year anniversary of the Gaza war.
According to Nicaragua, the ongoing conflict now involves Lebanon and poses significant threats to Syria, Yemen, and Iran. The Middle East is on edge, fearing further escalation after Iran fired a series of missiles at Israel on October 1. Iran, which supports the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah—recently targeted by deadly Israeli strikes—is a close ally of Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega.
Ortega’s administration, which has faced growing international isolation, particularly since a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in 2018 that reportedly left around 300 people dead, also counts Iran among its allies.
