Johnny Gaudreau, 31, known for his dynamic play as a forward with both the Calgary Flames and the Blue Jackets, earned the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey’ for his passion and skill on the ice.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed deep sadness, noting, “The NHL family is shocked and grieving over the tragic deaths of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. Johnny’s love for hockey, rooted in his New Jersey childhood, was evident throughout his 11 NHL seasons.”
The New Jersey State Police reported that the accident occurred on Thursday when a Jeep Grand Cherokee collided with the Gaudreau brothers from behind while attempting to overtake an SUV. The SUV had moved aside to allow Johnny and Matthew, aged 29, to pass. The collision resulted in fatal injuries, and the driver is suspected of driving under the influence, facing charges of two counts of death by auto.

The Blue Jackets issued a heartfelt statement: “Johnny played with immense joy, which was evident to everyone who watched him. From Boston College to the Flames, Team USA, and the Blue Jackets, his love for hockey shone brightly. His impact on the sport and our organization was profound, though his personal touch will be remembered even more.”
Drafted by Calgary as the 104th pick in 2011, Gaudreau had a stellar rookie season in 2014-15, scoring 24 goals and 64 points, and played a crucial role in the Flames’ playoff return. He won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy in 2017 and enjoyed a standout season in 2021-22, finishing second in league scoring with 115 points.
In the off-season, Gaudreau signed a seven-year, $68.25 million deal with the Blue Jackets and was named an NHL All-Star for the seventh time in 2023. Over his career, he accumulated 243 goals and 500 assists in 763 regular season games.
