NAB Pulls Back PSO Appointment Reference Involving Ex-PM

KARACHI: On Monday, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chose to retract its reference concerning alleged illegal appointments at Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

NAB had previously filed a reference against former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and the then petroleum secretary, accusing them of making illegal appointments at Pakistan State Oil (PSO) in violation of regulations. NAB claimed these actions resulted in a loss of Rs138 million to the national treasury.

During today’s session at the accountability court, the NAB team requested to withdraw the case, and the court granted this request. The court instructed NAB to return the reference to its chairman.

In 2020, the accountability court had indicted Abbasi and three others in connection with alleged unlawful appointments to two significant positions at PSO. Throughout the proceedings, Abbasi had consistently demanded evidence against him related to the NAB reference.

Despite over four years of hearings, NAB has now opted to withdraw the reference.
