Muzaffarabad Moves to Eliminate Plastic Waste

Muzaffarabad-(Staff Reporter)- Azad Jammu and Kashmir, recently witnessed a significant step towards environmental protection. Deputy Commissioner Mudassar Farooq chaired a crucial meeting to discuss the prohibition of plastic (polythene) bags. The gathering aimed to implement the AJK Plastic Bag Regulation 2023, approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The meeting commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, setting a tone of responsibility and commitment. Assistant Director EPA Affan Khan explained the purpose of the gathering, highlighting the regulation’s key aspects. The ban on the manufacture, sale, and use of plastic bags in Azad Kashmir was emphasized, along with fines and penalties for violations.

“The use of plastic bags has been declared a serious violation of the law and an impeachable offense against environmental protection,” Khan stated. He outlined the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to curb plastic waste, underscoring the importance of collective action.

Consult with wholesalers, suppliers, and traders to determine a time frame for destocking existing plastic bags
Classify businesses to identify alternatives to plastic bags
Replace plastic bags with eco-friendly options
Ensure no financial loss to consumers/traders during the transition

Representatives from Anjuman Tajran and traders will convene with Assistant Commissioner Muzaffarabad on September 30 to explore alternatives. This collaborative approach aims to facilitate a seamless transition.

EPA-approved eco-friendly shopping bags have been introduced, offering a sustainable substitute. Exporters using plastic bags will face fines, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to environmental protection.

Muzaffarabad’s lack of a municipal plastic waste disposal mechanism poses significant environmental risks. The meeting acknowledged the urgent need to address this issue, emphasizing the importance of proper waste management.
