Mpox cases rising in Pakistan, fourth case reported amid global outbreak

Islamabad/Peshawar;-The number of mpox cases in Pakistan has increased to four, with the latest case confirmed in Peshawar, the capital city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to Public Health Director Dr. Irshad Ali Roghani, a medical team at Peshawar Airport identified a patient showing symptoms during screening and transferred him to the Police and Services Hospital (PSH) for further evaluation.

The patient’s pathological tests were conducted, and the Public Health Reference Laboratory confirmed the presence of mpox. Dr. Roghani reported that the patient is in a stable condition and is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Notably, the patient belongs to the Peshawar district, marking the fourth confirmed case of mpox in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Dr. Roghani emphasized that no local cases have been reported so far, indicating that all confirmed cases have been detected among travelers. The province’s health department has established an integrated surveillance and response system for mpox to monitor and contain the spread of the virus.

Earlier, the health ministry clarified that the first mpox case detected in Pakistan was of the clade 2 variant. A second case was confirmed last week, also detected at the Peshawar airport. The third case was identified on Saturday after medical personnel at Bacha Khan International Airport spotted two travelers displaying symptoms of the mpox virus.
