Mohammad Rizwan Poised to Succeed Babar Azam as Pakistan Cricket Team Captain

Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan is emerging as a leading contender to take over the national cricket team’s captaincy after Babar Azam’s resignation, sources suggest.

Insiders revealed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials have been instructed to involve Rizwan in team selection discussions.

In a message on X, the 29-year-old Babar explained his decision: “Stepping down will allow me to have more clarity moving forward and focus my energy on my game and personal growth.”

Gary Kirsten, the white-ball coach, had previously proposed a change in T20 captaincy as part of his strategy, which he outlined during a visit to Pakistan in July. During this visit, he held discussions with PCB officials and met Babar to address leadership concerns.

Although Babar was not part of the official consultation process, he informed a senior PCB official about his decision to step down before announcing it publicly. He emphasized that his resignation was a personal choice, aimed at allowing him to focus on his role as a player and his personal development.

While Babar stepped down from the T20 captaincy, he has been encouraged to remain the captain of the ODI team, as Kirsten prefers him to continue leading in that format.
