Arsenal have officially secured the signing of Euro 2024 champion Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, enhancing their midfield with both depth and experience.
The Spain international midfielder joins the Gunners for an initial fee of €32 million ($36 million, £27 million), with the potential for an additional €5 million in performance-based add-ons.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his enthusiasm for the new signing, stating, “Mikel is a player who brings immense quality through his experience and versatility. He has consistently performed at the highest levels in both club and international football for several years. His technical skills, along with his strong and positive character, will undoubtedly strengthen our squad.”

Merino played a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 success, notably scoring the decisive goal in their quarter-final victory over Germany. The 28-year-old midfielder has been with Real Sociedad for six years but is no stranger to English football, having played for Newcastle United during the 2017/18 season.
This acquisition marks Arsenal’s second significant signing of the transfer window, following the arrival of Italian international defender Riccardo Calafiori. Additionally, the club has made goalkeeper David Raya’s loan from Brentford a permanent deal.
“Mikel was a top target for us this summer,” said Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu. “We identified him as a perfect fit for our squad, someone who can elevate our team as we build on last season’s strong performances. His added quality, experience, physicality, and athleticism will be vital as we approach the new season.”
After finishing as runners-up to Manchester City in the last two Premier League seasons, Arsenal is determined to challenge for the title and end their trophy drought, which dates back to the 2003/04 season.
