Met Office Issues GLOF Alert for GB, KP Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

The PMD has advised residents, tourists and travellers to avoid rivers

ISLAMABAD: (News Desk) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Saturday issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of potential flooding and landslides due to forecast heavy rainfall.

According to the PMD, a western weather system is expected to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms to various parts of the country over the coming days. The anticipated heavy rainfall could accelerate glacier melting, increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods in vulnerable mountainous regions.

The Met Office warned that rising water levels in glacial lakes may trigger GLOF incidents, posing a serious threat to nearby communities. It also cautioned that low-lying areas, streams and riverbanks could experience sudden flash floods, while hilly and mountainous areas remain vulnerable to landslides and mudslides.

The PMD has advised residents, tourists and travellers to avoid rivers, streams and glacier-prone areas during the alert period. District administrations and rescue agencies have been directed to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

The department also urged the public to stay informed through official weather updates and strictly follow safety advisories to minimise risks during the expected spell of severe weather.
