Messi Honored with Presidential Medal of Freedom for Soccer Achievements and Philanthropy

WASHINGTON: Lionel Messi, the legendary Argentine footballer and World Cup winner, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, by President Joe Biden. However, Messi was absent from the ceremony held at the White House, as he had a prior commitment.

The 8-time Ballon d’Or winner, currently playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, became the first Argentine and the first male soccer player to receive the prestigious award. Despite this honor, Messi’s representatives issued a statement explaining that due to scheduling conflicts, Messi was unable to attend.

According to the statement, Messi expressed his gratitude for the recognition and noted that he hoped to meet with President Biden in the near future. He also conveyed his appreciation for the gesture and emphasized that it was a “profound privilege” to receive the award.

Other notable recipients of the Medal of Freedom at the ceremony included U2’s Bono, former basketball star Magic Johnson, and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
