PTI lawmaker Sher Afzal Marwat has advocated for a shift in the political narrative, suggesting that discussions should begin with political parties rather than solely with the establishment.He stated, “After our recent interactions with treasury lawmakers, it’s clear that the idea of talks being limited to the establishment needs to change. We should engage with the PML-N, PPP, and other political parties.”
This statement follows PTI founder Imran Khan’s refusal to engage with the opposition, claiming that the ruling coalition lacks legitimacy. Marwat’s comments come in the wake of bipartisan criticism regarding the recent arrest of PTI MNAs from Parliament. In response to the situation, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has established a committee consisting of PTI leaders and members from the ruling coalition.
Marwat emphasized that engaging in dialogue with all parties could lead to a consensus in the country’s best interests. “After discussions with everyone, we can reach an agreement that serves the nation,” he said.
According to the PTI lawmaker, there was a development in the recent NA session where lawmakers started talks. He praised the NA speaker for playing a “key role” in developments following their arrests.
“PTI MNAs feel that the National Assembly speaker’s gesture has become uncontroversial,” he stated.
When asked how many leaders supported this suggestion, he noted that PTI MNAs were unified in their stance. He expressed the belief that there are existing connections between the establishment and the ruling parties.
In response to a question, Marwat emphasized the necessity of reforms in the Constitution that are beneficial to the people.
He further noted that the reported abduction of PTI lawmakers prior to the legislation has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the constitutional amendment process.
The PTI MNA also suggested providing working papers to leaders to facilitate discussions on the proposed legislation.
