Labor class urgently calls for minimum wage increase as inflation takes toll.Sajid Turi

Islamabad_  Sajid Turi, the Federal Minister wrote  a heartfelt letter addressed to Prime Minister Shabaz Shareef, , highlights the devastating impact of skyrocketing prices and prevailing inflation on the labor class in recent years. The employed and unemployed laborers have found themselves more vulnerable than ever before due to the continuous rise in prices and the fragile state of the economy. While the provincial governments have taken measures to support the labor class, the current wages remain insufficient to meet the basic needs of the common people. Consequently, urgent government initiatives to increase labor wages are necessary to alleviate these challenges.

The last increase in minimum wages occurred in 2022, and since then, no further relief has been announced by the government, despite increases in pay and allowances for other provincial and federal government employees. It is important to note that labor affairs have been devolved to the provinces, making it the prerogative of the respective governments to decide on wage adjustments.

Considering the gravity of the situation, Sajid Turi appeals to Prime Minister Shabaz Shareef to direct the Finance Division to increase the minimum wages by at least 50% of the current rate, following consultations with all stakeholders at the federal and provincial levels.
