KP faces devastating toll with 275 martyrs in 636 terrorist attacks this year
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province has endured a severe toll of violence in 2024, with 275 individuals martyred and 460 others injured in 636 terrorist attacks, according to a detailed report by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police. The report, compiled by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), paints a grim picture of the escalating security challenges in the region.
Of the 275 martyrs, 142 were police officers, while 133 were civilians. Additionally, 214 police personnel and 246 civilians were injured in the attacks, which were carried out by banned militant groups. The attacks included six suicide bombings, 113 IED explosions, and 355 gunfire incidents, affecting various areas of the province.
In response to the surge in terrorism, the provincial government, along with the CTD, has ramped up counter-terrorism efforts. The CTD report revealed that 2,981 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) were carried out throughout the year, resulting in the deaths of 246 terrorists. In addition, 739 militants were arrested, including 29 high-profile targets. During these operations, significant recoveries were made, including 849 kilograms of explosives, 162 hand grenades, seven suicide jackets, and numerous firearms, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by extremist groups in the region.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur addressed the media at the CTD headquarters in Peshawar, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving security. “The law-and-order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has significantly improved under our administration,” Gandapur stated. He added that the government is enhancing the prosecution process and strengthening security infrastructure, including the release of one billion rupees for the CTD to improve forensic capabilities. The government also plans to purchase 20 bomb-proof vehicles to further bolster the province’s security.
Despite the government’s efforts, the province continues to face significant challenges as it battles rising terrorism and extremism.
