KMC to Make All Parking Sites Free of Charge in Karachi
KARACHI: In a major move, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has decided to make all its parking sites free of charge, as announced by Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab. This decision aims to reduce the financial burden on citizens, and a formal notification will soon be issued to officially remove parking fees from designated sites.
The mayor stated that KMC is now financially stable with over Rs 2 billion in its accounts and additional funds expected. He emphasized that KMC no longer requires the Rs 40 to 50 million generated from parking fees, adding that legal action would be taken against individuals collecting parking charges under KMC’s name.
As part of the new policy, parking fees will no longer be charged on 46 out of the 106 main roads under KMC’s jurisdiction. However, the fee system will remain in place in 25 towns and 6 cantonment board areas.
In addition, the Karachi administration has imposed a ban on double parking on the busiest roads in the city as part of efforts to manage the growing traffic congestion. This decision came after a meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi, Hassan Naqvi, who emphasized the need for better traffic management and enforcement of parking regulations.
DIG Traffic Karachi, Ahmed Nawaz, revealed that there are 201 charged parking areas in the city, with around 130 located on major roads. However, illegal and double parking, particularly in the South District, has contributed to significant traffic issues. The authorities have agreed to take strict action against parking contractors violating the rules, with permits being canceled for non-compliance.

Additionally, the meeting also discussed the closure of ticket counters for intercity buses operating within Karachi. These counters have been contributing to congestion, and no more tickets will be sold from these locations. The Transport Secretary has been tasked with ensuring the closure of these counters as part of broader efforts to reduce traffic pressure.
The implementation of these new measures is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety in Karachi. The authorities are hopeful that the strict enforcement of these policies will lead to smoother movement across the city.
