Khawaja Asif Welcomes Resumption of PIA Flights to Europe After 4.5 Years
PIA Plans European Expansion and US Flight Connections
ISLAMABAD: Minister for Aviation, Khawaja Asif, expressed immense gratitude for the resumption of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Europe, following a hiatus of 4.5 years. Speaking at a ceremony held at Islamabad International Airport, the minister described the return of PIA to European skies as a significant milestone and a moment of national pride.
“I cannot thank Allah enough for this achievement,” said Khawaja Asif, emphasizing that the resumption of flights marks the revival of Pakistan’s identity on the international stage. “The green crescent flag will once again fly across the skies of Europe, restoring our lost identity,” he added.
The minister revealed that PIA has plans to expand its operations across Europe and form collaborations with other airlines to offer passengers access to destinations in the United States, either through Paris or other transit hubs. He also highlighted efforts to restart PIA flights on three routes to the United Kingdom in the near future.
Acknowledging the dedication of his predecessor, Khawaja Saad Rafique, and the continuous support of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Khawaja Asif stated that restoring PIA’s European operations was a collective effort spanning over the last eight to ten months. “Today is a historic day for PIA, civil aviation, and the government,” he said.
The minister also thanked the European Union aviation authorities for their cooperation in lifting the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) ban, which had restricted PIA’s operations to Europe.
He further stressed the crucial role that PIA plays in stabilizing the global airline industry and assured that the airline is taking steps to recover its lost market share. “New aircraft will soon be added to PIA’s fleet, and we expect high booking levels across all flights,” he remarked, noting that the first outbound flight to France had been fully booked.
Khawaja Asif also reiterated the government’s intention to privatize PIA to enhance its efficiency and competitiveness. “We will privatize PIA in the near future,” he confirmed.
The resumption of flights, he said, is expected to benefit thousands of overseas Pakistanis living in Europe. PIA, which had previously provided free transportation for the bodies of Pakistanis returning from Europe, will continue this service, he assured.

Finally, Khawaja Asif addressed the past controversies surrounding the airline, stating, “Irresponsible statements have caused damage to our national airline. Accountability will be ensured for those who tarnished PIA’s reputation.” The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring PIA’s prestige and ensuring its growth in the highly competitive global aviation market.
