Khawaja Asif Accuses Ex-ISI Chief Faiz Hameed of Planning May 9 Target
Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz Declined Gen Bajwa's Offer to Leave Pakistan, Says Minister

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has revealed new information about the events of May 9, 2023, describing them as part of a “full-blown coup” orchestrated by retired Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, the former chief of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
In an interview on Samaa TV’s ‘Red Line with Talat,’ Asif detailed that Faiz Hameed, who was the former Peshawar corps commander, was responsible for assigning the targets for May 9, 2023. He also played a key role in shielding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from the no-confidence motion that ultimately led to Khan’s removal from office.

The defense minister claimed that Faiz Hameed had specific goals during the alleged coup attempt and that his efforts were crucial in attempting to protect the PTI leader amid his political downfall.
This statement is among the first public accusations linking a retired senior military officer directly to the political upheaval that led to the collapse of the PTI government.
Additionally, Asif discussed former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa, alleging that Bajwa’s appointment as army chief was made possible by his father-in-law, General (retd) Ijaz Amjad, who is said to have helped him secure his position within the military hierarchy.

Khawaja Asif also alleged that on May 21, 2018, then-army chief Gen Bajwa had proposed to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz that they leave the country. According to Asif, Nawaz Sharif decisively turned down the offer, opting to remain in the political arena.
Asif also proposed that Imran Khan’s case should be handled by a military court.
