Detention of Former Jail Officials Linked to Imran Khan’s Case Sparks Controversy

An investigation is underway involving six employees, based on information provided by Akram, a former official

A former deputy superintendent and a jail assistant from Adiala Jail have been arrested on charges of assisting Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), during his imprisonment.

The investigation has been broadened to encompass additional jail staff due to allegations of abuse of power. Former deputy superintendent Zafar and jail assistant Nazim are among those detained for supposedly providing unauthorized privileges to Khan while he was in custody. Zafar is said to reside near the jail.

The probe has been extended to six additional employees based on information from Muhammad Akram, another former deputy superintendent who served at Adiala Jail for 15 years before being dismissed in June. Akram is said to have close ties with Imran Khan and is suspected of facilitating illicit communications. The investigation has uncovered evidence of WhatsApp calls linked to three European countries, which were used to communicate with Khan in violation of prison rules.

Akram is also alleged to have connections with PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari and is accused of acting as a messenger for Khan. A meeting of the jail administration is anticipated today to address the facilities provided to Khan contrary to prison regulations.

The ongoing investigation involves Akram and assistant superintendent Muhammad Bilal, who were both removed from their positions in June following a security report. Since their removal, the investigation has broadened to include additional jail staff. The jail administration is expected to convene soon to review the findings and decide on further actions.
