Kashmir Martyrs’ Day Being Observed Today to Honour the Heroes of July 13, 1931

As the time for Zuhr prayers approached, one young man stood up to give the azan (call to prayer) and was immediately shot dead.

Islamabad – Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control, as well as around the world, are observing Kashmir Martyrs’ Day today (Sunday) to pay tribute to the 22 brave souls martyred on July 13, 1931, and all others who have laid down their lives in the ongoing struggle for freedom.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the day is being marked in occupied Jammu and Kashmir with a complete shutdown and a symbolic march to the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib in Srinagar, where the victims of the 1931 massacre are buried.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) has called for the shutdown and march, with widespread support from pro-freedom leaders and organisations. In a statement from Srinagar, the APHC urged people to observe the day with unity and purpose, stating that it sends a strong message to the international community that Kashmiris reject Indian occupation and seek a peaceful resolution based on UN resolutions.

Events including rallies, seminars, and conferences are also being held across Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, and in major cities around the world to honour the martyrs and spotlight the Kashmiri freedom movement.

The events of July 13, 1931, hold deep historical significance for Kashmiris. On that day, Dogra soldiers opened fire on peaceful protestors gathered outside the Central Jail in Srinagar during court proceedings against Abdul Qadeer, who had spoken out against the oppressive Dogra regime.

As the time for Zuhr prayers approached, one young man stood up to give the azan (call to prayer) and was immediately shot dead. Another took his place, only to be martyred as well. In total, 22 unarmed young men were killed, each sacrificing his life to complete the call to prayer — an act that became a lasting symbol of resistance and faith.
