Israel Claims Hezbollah Leader Hashem Safiuddin Killed in Beirut Airstrike
Israel has announced that Hashem Safiuddin, the expected successor to Hezbollah’s current leader, Syed Hassan Nasrallah, has been killed in an airstrike on Beirut.
According to a report by American news outlet Axios, the Israeli military stated that Safiuddin, a high-ranking Hezbollah figure, was targeted during air raids on the Lebanese capital.
Safiuddin was seen as the likely candidate to take over as Secretary General of Hezbollah. However, an Israeli official mentioned that Safiuddin was in a heavily fortified underground bunker at the time, and it remains unclear if the strike successfully killed him.
Hezbollah has not yet confirmed or denied Israel’s claims, though witnesses reported hearing explosions near Beirut’s airport and seeing smoke in the area.
