Instagram Ends End-to-End Encryption for Direct Messages

Meta Disables Instagram DM Encryption, Users Urged to Save Chats

LONDON (Web Desk) – Instagram, the social media giant with over 3 billion monthly users, announced it will end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages (DMs), effective May 8. Users who previously relied on encrypted DMs for private communication will see their chats fully exposed unless they save messages or media beforehand.

The change was quietly detailed in a Help Center update without an official press release. Older app versions may need to be updated to access the message export feature, and users are strongly urged to download any content they wish to preserve before the encryption is removed.

Instagram first introduced optional encrypted DMs in 2021 as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s privacy-focused vision, but adoption was extremely low. Meta cited this limited usage as unsustainable, recommending that users who value privacy switch to WhatsApp, where encryption remains standard.

Tech analysts warn that unencrypted messages could allow Meta to scan conversations for illegal content or provide authorities access when requested. Experts also raised concerns about potential AI training uses and whether WhatsApp might face similar changes in the future.

The move contrasts with other platforms expanding encryption while Instagram reverses course, leaving questions about the future of encrypted voice and video calls on Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
