Indian Police Raid Home & Office of Late Kashmiri Leader Syed Ali Geelani

Syed Ali Geelani, a prominent pro-independence leader, passed away in September 2021

Srinagar: Indian police have raided the home and office of the late Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani, as well as the headquarters of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), in a move that has sparked widespread condemnation. According to reports from the Kashmir Media Service (KMS), the raids resulted in the seizure of Geelani’s personal books and key documents.

The APHC, a prominent political alliance in Jammu and Kashmir, strongly condemned the actions, calling them a “blatant violation of human rights.” The raids are viewed as part of an ongoing crackdown on political dissent in the region, with authorities accusing Geelani and other separatist leaders of promoting unrest.

This raid is not an isolated incident. KMS reports indicate that, over the past year, more than 100 political and civil leaders in the region have had their homes raided by Indian authorities. During these raids, documents, books, and electronic devices have been confiscated, raising concerns over privacy violations and the suppression of political opposition.

In addition to targeting political leaders, Indian authorities have also raided over 80 offices of social organizations as part of an investigation into their funding sources. Critics argue that these raids are aimed at stifling dissent and suppressing voices that challenge the government’s stance on Kashmir.

Syed Ali Geelani, a prominent pro-independence leader, passed away in September 2021, but his legacy continues to shape the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. The latest actions against his associates are seen by many as an attempt to further diminish the influence of those advocating for greater autonomy in the region.

The situation in Jammu and Kashmir remains tense, as such raids and clampdowns fuel further mistrust and political unrest. The international community has urged both sides to address human rights concerns and engage in dialogue to resolve the long-standing conflict.
