Indian Military Under Scrutiny for Sexual Violence Allegations
According to NCRB data, more than 270 rape cases were registered against members of the armed forces between 2017 and 2022. The accused reportedly include police officers, government employees, and military personnel.
These incidents have allegedly occurred both within India and in the disputed region of Kashmir. Human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have raised concerns, highlighting sexual violence as a critical human rights issue in these areas.
One of the most prominent cases dates back to 1991, when 53 women in Jammu and Kashmir reportedly testified before the Chief Justice, accusing armed forces personnel of sexual assault. In the same year, a separate incident from Kashmir’s Kunan and Poshpora villages alleges that between 23 and 100 women were sexually assaulted during a military search operation.
Reports also point to cases of sexual harassment within the Indian military itself, with over 1,000 female personnel allegedly affected.
Additionally, Indian peacekeepers abroad have faced allegations of sexual misconduct. Some personnel were implicated in cases of sexual exploitation in Congo, and three others were convicted of sexual assault in South Africa.
These reports underscore the need for greater accountability and measures to address sexual violence within military contexts.
