Hyderabad PSL Franchise Rules Out Captaincy Based on Star Power or Seniority
The ownership group of the newly formed Hyderabad franchise in the Pakistan Super League has made it clear that team captaincy will not be decided on the basis of seniority or star status. Franchise owner Fawad Sarwar said leadership roles will be awarded strictly on merit through a defined selection process and extensive consultation with the technical staff.
In an interview, Sarwar said no player, whether local or overseas, has an automatic right to captain the team simply because of reputation or experience. He stressed that Hyderabad will follow its own leadership criteria, adding that strong leadership qualities will be the deciding factor rather than name recognition. He said the captain could be anyone who meets the required benchmark.
Sarwar also praised former Pakistan captain Babar Azam, calling him his favourite cricketer, and said he would welcome the opportunity to include him in the squad if circumstances allow. He added that the franchise is focused on building a competitive and well-balanced team for its debut season.
The Hyderabad franchise is currently finalising its coaching and support staff ahead of its inaugural PSL campaign. Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie has been appointed head coach, while Craig White and Grant Bradburn are among the assistant coaches tasked with helping establish the team’s structure and culture.
Hyderabad will make its PSL debut as the league expands to eight teams in PSL eleven, with the addition of Hyderabad and Sialkot. The franchise rights for Hyderabad were secured by the FKS Group at an auction held in Islamabad on January eight, two thousand twenty six, with a successful bid of one point seven five billion rupees.
The team will represent Hyderabad for the first time in PSL history and is scheduled to compete in PSL eleven from March twenty six to May three, two thousand twenty six. The official team name and logo are expected to be unveiled around the player auction on February eleven, while Niaz Stadium has been designated as the home venue, with possible upgrades being explored in coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
