Heat Triggers Fire at Iraq Military Base Ammunition Depot

Baghdad: (News Desk) – A fire broke out at an ammunition warehouse inside Camp Taji, a major military base north of Baghdad, after soaring temperatures triggered an explosion, Iraq’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday.

Defence Ministry spokesman Yehia Rasool said the blaze started in a storage facility containing ammunition belonging to the 9th Armoured Division. The government’s Security Media Cell confirmed that some ammunition detonated due to the intense heat.

Firefighters were deployed to control the flames, while authorities monitored the situation at the base. Camp Taji previously hosted troops from the US-led coalition fighting militants before their withdrawal.

Explosions at military facilities and ammunition storage sites are not uncommon in Iraq, where safety concerns often increase during extreme summer temperatures that can approach 50 degrees Celsius.
