Haaland Strikes Late as Norway Set Up Brazil Round of 16 Clash
Norway Brazil round of 16 showdown confirmed after dramatic 2-1 win over Ivory Coast
Norway vs Brazil – (Web Desk) – Norway have booked their spot in the Norway Brazil round of 16 clash after edging past Ivory Coast 2-1 in a tense World Cup last-16 qualifier in Texas. Erling Haaland scored a late winner in the 86th minute, sending the Scandinavian side into uncharted territory and setting up a blockbuster meeting with five-time champions Brazil this Sunday in New Jersey.
The match, played inside the air-conditioned home of the Dallas Cowboys, started slowly but burst into life just before halftime. Antonio Nusa lit up the stadium with a stunning strike, cutting inside from the left and curling the ball into the top corner after a smart pass from captain Martin Odegaard.
Ivory Coast responded strongly in the second half. Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, brought on after the hour mark, changed the game almost single-handedly. He first denied Norway a certain second goal with a goal-line clearance, then danced past two defenders to score a brilliant equalizer in the 74th minute.
Just when the match looked headed for extra time, Haaland pounced. The Manchester City striker got on the end of a low cross from Patrick Berg and poked the ball home from close range for his fifth goal of the tournament.
Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland played the hero in stoppage time, pulling off a stunning save to deny Diallo from a dangerous free-kick and seal the win for Norway.
This victory marks the first knockout-stage win in Norway’s World Cup history. The team, who finished as runners-up to France in the group stage, will now test themselves against a much stronger Brazilian side in the next round.
Ivory Coast, appearing in the knockout rounds for the first time, will be proud of their fighting spirit despite the heartbreaking exit. Young stars like Yan Diomande and Amad Diallo showed they can compete with the best teams in the world.
