GB Assembly Unanimously Passes Resolution Seeking Interim Provincial Status
Gilgit-(Musaab Khaliq)- The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution calling on the federal government to grant the region interim provincial status through a constitutional amendment or an Act of Parliament.
The resolution urged the Centre to provide Gilgit-Baltistan representation in the National Assembly, Senate and other constitutional institutions, while safeguarding Pakistan’s longstanding position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
Lawmakers from both the treasury and opposition benches supported the resolution, describing interim provincial status as a longstanding demand of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. They said the move would ensure constitutional rights, greater political representation and improved access to national resources.
The House also called on the federal government to expedite the legislative process to grant the region interim provincial status without affecting Pakistan’s international commitments regarding the Kashmir issue.
The resolution emphasized that granting interim provincial status would strengthen governance, improve public service delivery and promote the socio-economic development of Gilgit-Baltistan, while preserving the region’s constitutional and legal position linked to the Kashmir dispute.
