France Warns US Against Greenland Tariff Escalation

France Warns United States of Consequences Over Greenland Tariff Threats

WASHINGTON: (Web Deks) – The United States could face significant economic consequences if President Donald Trump follows through on his threats to impose tariffs on European countries resisting his plans to acquire Greenland, French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard warned on Sunday.

Speaking to broadcasters Europe 1 and CNews, Genevard said, “In this escalation of tariffs, he has a lot to lose as well, including his own farmers and industrialists.”

Trump has threatened to impose a 10-percent tariff starting February 1 on all goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. The levy would rise to 25 percent on June 1 “until such time as a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland,” according to Trump, who has argued that Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is vital to U.S. national security.

In response, an extraordinary meeting of EU ambassadors has been convened in Brussels for Sunday afternoon. Genevard highlighted Europe’s commercial leverage, warning that “this escalation could be deadly—but it could also be deadly for the United States.”

The minister stressed that any U.S. attempt to acquire Greenland is “unacceptable” and asserted, “It is clear that the Europeans will not let the United States do as it pleases.”
