France signals nuclear shield expansion across Europe amid
France considers nuclear protection for Europe, urging independent defence, reducing reliance on United States amid rising regional security concerns today.
France – (Web Desk) – France has indicated it may expand its nuclear protection to cover all of Europe, as President Emmanuel Macron urged European nations to take greater control of their own defence. Speaking at a press conference on February 13, 2025, he said Europe must build a stronger, shared deterrence system to protect itself and rethink its overall security structure.
Macron also revealed that Paris will begin discussions with allies to develop a comprehensive nuclear deterrence strategy. In remarks seen as a subtle message to the United States, he stressed that Europe should decide its security future independently, especially as it continues to share the continent with Russia. He made it clear that Europe should not let others lead these important decisions on its behalf.
His statement comes as a major snub to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Chief Mark Rutte, who previously said that Europe cannot guarantee its security without the U.S. nuclear umbrella.
France and Germany are involved in dialogue to “create convergence in a strategic approach between the two countries.”
Europe’s renewed focus on its own security comes after facing repeated setbacks from Trump. The U.S. president has threatened to acquire Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory in the Kingdom of Denmark.

Previously, Spain also called for a Europe wide army to strengthen the security of the continent.
If these efforts prove successful, it would mark the first time that Europe becomes less dependent on the US nuclear umbrella since the end of the Cold War.
