Trade Bodies Seek More Time as FBR Extends Tax Return Deadline
ISLAMABAD: (Mudassar Iqbal) – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 by 15 days, giving taxpayers additional time to complete their returns and fulfil compliance requirements.
According to FBR officials, around 5.2 million income tax returns had been filed by Wednesday, including nearly 1.3 million returns submitted by new taxpayers.
The total represents a significant increase compared with approximately 3.2 million returns filed during the corresponding period last year, as the original September 30 deadline approached.
Under the FBR notification, the deadline for submitting annual income tax returns for Tax Year 2026, which was due to expire on September 30, has been extended by 15 days.
The extension follows requests from business organisations and tax professionals seeking additional time to complete the filing process. The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and the Pakistan Tax Bar Association separately urged the government and the FBR to extend the deadline, citing difficulties faced by taxpayers in preparing returns and arranging supporting documents.
According to FBR sources, trade bodies also approached Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to seek additional time for taxpayers.
The extension comes as the tax authority continues efforts to broaden Pakistan’s tax base and bring more individuals and businesses into the formal tax system.
The addition of nearly 1.3 million new filers reflects an increase in the number of taxpayers entering the return-filing system. The extended deadline is expected to provide additional time for individuals and businesses to complete their tax returns.
