Everton Beat Newcastle as Barry Scores Again at St James’ Park
Jaissle feels the heat as Newcastle slump to another home defeat, with Ramsey sent off at the end.
Premier League – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk)Everton beat Newcastle on a rainy Monday night, and Barry was the man who made the difference. His goal early in the second half lifted Everton to seventh in the Premier League.
Newcastle dropped to 13th, and their fans left unhappy. Many headed for the exits long before the final whistle.
The home night ended in more pain. Jacob Ramsey was sent off in the last seconds after a rough foul on Harrison Armstrong. It was his second yellow card in just 60 seconds.
Newcastle have now lost four of their last five games in all competitions. They have won only twice in their last seven.
Boss Jaissle and his players were booed off at half-time. They heard the same again at full-time. The German coach is feeling the pressure in his first season in charge.
He took over after Eddie Howe left in the summer. He came from Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli, but he has found it hard to make an impact on Tyneside.
He badly needs a win at Fulham on Saturday to calm the growing doubts.
Newcastle also have a strange Monday problem. They have lost 22 of their last 33 Premier League games played on a Monday.
The first half was scrappy, with few chances. Harvey Barnes fired just wide, and Joelinton missed the target from 25 yards.
Everton struck four minutes after the break. Tyrique George got in behind poor Newcastle marking and shot at goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. He pushed the ball straight to Barry, who tapped in from close range.
A long VAR check followed, but the goal stood. Newcastle were not happy with the call.
This was Barry’s eighth goal of the season. He has scored four in his last six games.
It was also Everton’s second win over Newcastle in five days. They won 3-1 in the League Cup fourth round on Thursday.
Newcastle had chances to hit back. Fabian Schar blazed wide, and Anthony Elanga hit the post from close range.
The hosts did not put a shot on target until the 86th minute. Yoane Wissa’s effort was easy for Pickford. He forced a better save in stoppage time.
The win ended Everton’s two straight league defeats, against Arsenal and Chelsea. It was also their first away league win since February 28, when they also beat Newcastle.
Jack Grealish missed the squad again after a “breach of club discipline.” Everton said he was “not match fit.” The team did fine without him.
