Elon Musk Unveils His Own AI-Powered Encyclopedia to Rival Wikipedia
The first public version of Grokipedia, labeled “0.1,” went live with over 885,000 articles by Monday evening.
ISLAMABAD: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, launched Grokipedia on Monday, as a rival to Wikipedia, a platform he has repeatedly accused of political bias.
Over 885,000 Articles Already
The first public version of Grokipedia, labeled “0.1,” went live with over 885,000 articles by Monday evening. Although significantly smaller than Wikipedia’s English-language collection of more than seven million entries, Musk has already claimed Grokipedia offers a better product.
In a post on X, Musk said, “The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal.” He also promised that version 1.0 of the site would be “10X better” than the current version.
Delayed Launch
The platform had originally been scheduled for launch in late September, but Musk delayed it, citing the need to “purge out the propaganda.” That decision followed months of public criticism directed at Wikipedia, including allegations that the site is “controlled by far-left activists.” In 2024, Musk also called on people to stop donating to the platform, questioning its neutrality.

In August, he argued that Wikipedia should not be used as a source for X’s Community Notes feature, stating that its editorial structure was “extremely left-biased.”
AI-Generated Content
Grokipedia’s content is generated through artificial intelligence, using xAI’s generative assistant Grok. An entry on Musk within the platform says he has played a role in shaping public debates on technology, demographics, and institutional bias. It also notes criticism from what it describes as “legacy media outlets” that it claims show a systemic left-leaning slant in their coverage.
Wikipedia, which launched in 2001, is built and maintained by volunteers. It is supported largely through public donations and operates under a stated commitment to presenting information from a “neutral point of view.”
Musk’s launch of Grokipedia adds a new player to the online encyclopedia space, but it remains to be seen how the platform will address concerns around accuracy, bias, and editorial accountability as it expands.
