Dubai to Identify People By Their Walking Style

DUBAI: Dubai Police have introduced a first-of-its-kind Biometric Tunnel capable of identifying individuals based on their walking style, using artificial intelligence to create what officials describe as a “motion fingerprint”.

The technology, developed by Dubiometrics, was showcased at Gitex Global 2025 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

According to Dubai Police, the tunnel analyzes a person’s gait — including joint movement, rhythm, and physical traits such as the impact of flat feet — and generates a unique biometric signature in just five seconds. The system uses advanced AI and machine learning to map these movements with high precision.

Lt Col Dr Hamad Mansour Al Awr, the project director, said the tunnel forms part of continuous R&D efforts to advance forensic capabilities. He noted that the system can integrate motion fingerprints with other biometric identifiers, including facial, ear, and body measurements, enabling more robust evidence collection in criminal investigations.

Al Awr added that gait analysis offers a powerful identification tool when conventional methods — such as facial recognition or fingerprints — are unavailable, helping investigators strengthen case accuracy and attribution.
