FIA summons PTI chief in ‘cipher conspiracy’ case
ISLAMABAD_ EX Principal secretary Azam Khan on Wednesday claimed that the ex-premier had “pre-planned” the US cypher drama in an attempt to gain political mileage,
Khan, who had earlier been “missing” since last month, had recorded his statement under the CrPC 164 before a magistrate.
The former bureaucrat, in his confession, said when he provided the ex-premier with the cypher, he was “happy” and termed the language as a “US blunder”. The former minister then said, according to Azam, that the cable could be used for “creating a narrative against the establishment and opposition”.
Per the confession, the former premier also told Azam that the cypher could be used to divert the public’s attention towards “foreign involvement” in the opposition’s no-confidence motion.
The ex-premier told him Azam he would display the cypher in front of the public and “twist the narrative that a foreign conspiracy is being hatched in collusion with local partners and play [the] victim card.
The confession further stated that the former premier kept cypher with himself in violation of the prevailing law.
However, Azam Khan in his confession said that till the time he was former prime minister’s principal secretary, the cypher was not returned to the Prime Minister’s Office as the latter had lost the original document.
The controversy first emerged on March 27, 2022, when Imran — less than a month before his ouster — brandished a letter, claiming that it was a cypher from a foreign nation, which mentioned that his government should be removed from power.
He did not reveal the contents of the letter nor mention the name of the nation that had sent it. But a few days later, he named the United States and said that Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Affairs Donald Lu had sought his removal.
The cypher was about former Pakistan ambassador to the US Asad Majeed’s meeting with Lu.
The former prime minister, claiming that he was reading contents from the cypher, said that “all will be forgiven for Pakistan if Imran Khan is removed from power”.
While,
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday while reacting to the former principal secretary to the deposed prime minister Azam Khan’s statement about the US cypher drama termed a clear charge sheet against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo Imran Khan.
Sanauallah in his statement slated Imran Khan for his alleged actions, stating that the PTI chairman had caused significant harm to foreign relations by turning the cypher issue into a mockery.
The interior minister lamented the damaging impact this had on Pakistan’s reputation in the international arena.
Referring to Azam Khan’s confession, Sanaullah emphasised that the statement served as an indictment against Imran Khan and his leadership of the PTI.
Drawing a historical parallel, Sanaullah alluded to Mir Jafar saying Khan’s actions were reminiscent of this betrayal, accusing him of conspiring against national institutions and causing harm to the country’s interests.
Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan has expressed doubt about the confessional statement of his former principal secretary Azam Khan.
In response to the development, Imran Khan termed Azam Khan an “honest man”, saying he would not accept the statement until he heard this from “his mouth”.
Meanwhile, the PTI has also issued a statement countering the confessional statement of Azam Khan while his whereabouts are unknown.
The party said that the confessional statement of Azam Khan, who has been missing since last one month, is a bundle of contradictions. The reality of his statement is yet to be determined but this is a reality that he has been missing since June 17, the party added.
The PTI said a case of Azam Khan’s disappearance has already been lodged and the federal police have so far failed to trace him.The PTI further remarked that the legal experts consider unthinkable the recording of a missing person’s confessional statement before a magistrate under section 164.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Wednesday summoned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief on July 25 (Tuesday) in a “cipher conspiracy” case.
The FIA had summoned the deposed premier at the FIA headquarters with all relevant documents.
If the PTI chief will not appear before the agency, the action will be taken against him, said the FIA notice.
