Constitutional Package Sparks Fiery Debate in Parliament”

Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal)_Pakistan’s National Assembly session descended into chaos on Monday as treasury and opposition benches engaged in a heated debate over the government’s proposed constitutional amendment bill. The session, initially scheduled for 11 am, began late at night and was eventually adjourned indefinitely.

The government’s efforts to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament hit a snag after Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman sought more time to review the amendment draft. Senator Irfan Siddiqui of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) revealed that Fazl’s arguments were well-justified, but he needed more time.

Today’s lower house of parliament session comes after the ruling coalition apparently failed to manage the required numbers i.,e a two-thirds majority in parliament despite strenuous efforts on Sunday which arguably centred around Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s assent to the proposed amendments.
