Cold Wave Brings Rain, Thunderstorms, and Relief from Smog Across Pakistan
The rain is expected to bring a refreshing change to the city’s atmosphere, though the chilly weather will remain.
Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted a major shift in weather patterns starting today, with rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms expected to affect large parts of the country. The cold wave, which will bring much-needed relief from the oppressive heat of the past months, will also significantly lower smog levels, offering a cleaner atmosphere.
Rain and Snowfall Expected Across the Country
The PMD predicts a series of rain showers, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, particularly in Islamabad and surrounding areas, including Rawalpindi, Attock, Jehlum, Chakwal, Lahore, and Faisalabad. For those in the northern parts of Pakistan, a more wintry mix is in store: lighter to moderate rain and snowfall are forecast for the popular hill stations of Murree and Galiyat, while areas like Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Malakand are also expected to see rain, with snowfall in the mountainous regions.
In the southern regions, Sindh is expected to experience cold, dry weather, while Balochistan will remain under the influence of the ongoing cold front. Meanwhile, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are likely to receive both rain and snowfall, with temperatures dropping further across the highlands.
Temperature Drops Provide Relief from Smog
The cold front has already brought a drop in temperatures across the country. Yesterday, Leh recorded the lowest temperature at -10°C, followed by Skardu at -9°C. Other notable minimum temperatures included 1°C in Murree, 3°C in Islamabad and Peshawar, and 4°C in Muzaffarabad. In contrast, the coastal areas of Gwadar and Karachi remained relatively mild, with temperatures at 12°C and 14°C, respectively.
The significant dip in temperatures is also contributing to a decrease in smog levels, which have plagued many cities. Lahore, which had been experiencing dangerously high pollution levels, is now benefiting from cleaner air. However, it still remains the second most polluted city in Pakistan today, with an average smog level of 190.
Lahore’s Light Rain Forecast to Intensify Cold
In Lahore, residents can expect light rain over the weekend, which will further intensify the cold. The minimum temperature is currently 7°C, with a maximum expected to reach 17°C. Wind speeds are predicted to be moderate, at 14 kilometers per hour, while humidity levels will hover around 65%. The rain is expected to bring a refreshing change to the city’s atmosphere, though the chilly weather will remain.

As the cold wave sweeps across the country, residents are advised to prepare for cooler conditions, with the possibility of snowfall in higher altitudes. The PMD has urged the public to stay updated on weather conditions, especially in areas prone to thunderstorms and snowfall.
This weather shift not only marks a welcome change in temperatures but also offers a reprieve from the high pollution levels that have gripped cities like Lahore. With the rain expected to clear the air, many will be hoping for a healthier, more comfortable end to the year.
