CJP Warns Tax Case Delays Hurt Economy, Investor Confidence

LAHORE (Web Desk): Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi has emphasized that the early resolution of tax cases impacting the national economy will be a top priority for the Supreme Court.

According to an official statement, the chief justice chaired a high-level meeting to formulate a strategy for the expeditious disposal of tax-related cases. The meeting was attended by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the FBR Member (Legal), and other senior officials.

During the meeting, Chief Justice Afridi noted that prolonged tax litigation limits fiscal space and negatively affects investor confidence. He stressed that delays in deciding tax cases are detrimental to economic stability and investment, adding that swift judicial decisions in such matters are essential for economic growth.

The statement said that detailed discussions were held on resolving long-pending and high-value tax disputes, with consensus reached on taking up high-value cases on a priority basis.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of enhanced coordination and communication between the judiciary and tax authorities. Participants discussed possible institutional reforms aimed at ensuring consistency, efficiency, and faster adjudication of tax cases across the system.
