CJP Protest Delhi: Youth Leader Vows March Despite Mass Detentions

Abhijeet Dipke says he will reach Jantar Mantar on Saturday, as police bring in extra forces and opposition parties meet the President.

Delhi – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – The CJP protest Delhi is set to take place on Saturday, and the group’s leader says nothing will stop it. Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janata Party, said the march will go ahead even though many of his supporters have been detained.

Dipke shared his message on X on Friday. He said he would land in Delhi on Saturday and walk to Jantar Mantar, “come what may.” Jantar Mantar is the spot in the capital set aside for public protests.

He also sent a direct message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the youth of the country are no longer afraid.

The protest is about a recent check of India’s voting lists. The process removed about 130 million names from the lists across the country.

Dipke’s movement wants the country’s top election official, Gyanesh Kumar, to resign. Opposition parties and their student wings are making the same demand.

India is the world’s largest democracy. It had at least 960 million eligible voters in 2024.

The list check began last year, before elections in the eastern state of Bihar. It has now reached most states.

What does the election commission say?

The election commission says the 130 million figure is not a final count. It says these are entries that were flagged during a draft stage, and that the work is not yet finished.

Officials also say that anyone removed by mistake can sign up again.

Critics do not accept this. Opposition parties say the check is the first of its kind in nearly twenty years. They call it mass disenfranchisement meant to help the ruling BJP. They want the exercise scrapped and the old lists brought back.

Police say there is no permission

Delhi Police said the party has no permission to hold Saturday’s protest. They warned that anyone who breaks the rules could face legal action.

The CJP says police in several states have been stopping and detaining its supporters on their way to Delhi. Dipke believes the number is in the thousands.

Reuters could not confirm these claims or the videos posted online.

Heavy security across the capital

Thousands of police and paramilitary personnel are being sent to Delhi. According to a government document seen by Reuters, some of them are coming from sensitive areas such as Jammu and Kashmir.

Travel will also be affected. Some long-distance trains heading to Delhi on Saturday have been cancelled.

Police have asked for fewer metro services as well, and some exits will be closed. Documents seen by Reuters say officials fear “unruly” crowds.

The Congress party, led by Rahul Gandhi, has called a meeting of its allies. More than a dozen parties that oppose Modi and the BJP are taking part.

The group will then meet President Droupadi Murmu on Friday evening. The President holds a mostly ceremonial role.

All eyes are now on Saturday. The CJP protest Delhi could test how police handle a large youth-led gathering without permission.

It could also keep the voter list row in the headlines. The row has already pulled in students, opposition leaders and ordinary voters.

Neither side shows signs of backing down. Dipke wants the election chief to step down, while officials say the process is lawful and still in progress.
