China’s Xi pushes for a global AI body at the Apec conference, countering the US.
China urges a global AI body to guide technology, trade, and green initiatives at the Asia-Pacific summit.
China – Korea – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Chinese President Xi Jinping took the spotlight at the recent APEC meeting. He proposed a global organisation to oversee artificial intelligence. He also positioned China as an alternative to the United States for trade cooperation. The forum included 21 economies representing about half of the world’s trade.
Xi said the “World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation” could create rules for AI and help countries work together. He added that AI should benefit all people everywhere. This is China’s first detailed plan shared publicly, while the US opposes strict global AI rules.
Xi suggested the AI organisation could be based in Shanghai. This shows China wants to lead in AI and technology governance.
US President Donald Trump did not stay for the full summit in Gyeongju. He left after a short meeting with Xi. They agreed on a one-year deal to ease some trade and tech restrictions. Analysts say China used the opportunity to show it supports open trade.
Xi also encouraged countries to share green technologies freely, like batteries and solar panels. China is already strong in these industries. This move shows China wants to be a leader in both trade and green technology.
The APEC leaders signed a joint statement emphasizing fairness and cooperation in trade. Unlike last year, the statement did not mention the World Trade Organisation or multilateralism. Experts say this reflects a shift in how global trade works today.

Xi announced China will host the 2026 APEC summit in Shenzhen. Once a fishing village, Shenzhen is now a major hub for technology, robotics, and electric cars.
At the summit, South Korea’s President Lee Jae‑myung asked China to help restart talks with North Korea. He mentioned recent meetings between China and North Korea as a positive sign. China and South Korea also signed seven agreements, including a currency-swap deal.

South Korea balances its relationship between China, its main trade partner, and the US, its security ally. President Lee said economic ties are shifting toward mutual benefits. He emphasized building partnerships that bring shared prosperity.
The APEC summit highlighted China’s role in AI, trade, green technology, and regional diplomacy. With the US stepping back from multilateral leadership, China is positioning itself as a key player in shaping the global economy.
