China Issues Over 85,000 Visas to Indian Citizens in 2025 Amid Growing Tensions with the US

China Boosts Ties with India Amid Rising US Tensions

BEIJING: In a notable diplomatic move, China has issued over 85,000 visas to Indian citizens in 2025, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year. The surge in visa issuance comes amid escalating trade tensions between China and the United States, with the two countries engaged in a trade war over tariffs.

According to the Chinese Embassy in India, more than 8,500 visas were granted to Indian nationals between January 1 and April 9, 2025. Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, took to social media platform X to share the figures, emphasizing China’s welcoming stance towards Indian visitors. Xu expressed hope that more Indians would visit China to experience its “open, safe, and friendly environment,” furthering people-to-people ties between the two nations.

The sharp rise in visas issued is in stark contrast to previous years. In 2023, only 180,000 visas were granted, while the 85,000 figure for just the first four months of 2025 shows a substantial increase. This uptick follows several changes to China’s visa policies introduced in late 2023, including the relaxation of online appointment requirements and the exemption of biometric data for short-term visa applicants. Additionally, visa application fees have been lowered, making the process more affordable for Indian applicants.

This surge aligns with China’s broader diplomatic strategy to strengthen ties with India, particularly in light of the growing trade conflict with the United States. Beijing has urged India to join it in opposing the US’s heavy tariffs on Chinese goods, with Chinese spokesperson Yu Jing calling for stronger economic and trade relations between the two countries to counter US economic pressures.

As tensions with the US continue to escalate, China’s efforts to foster closer ties with India underscore its growing focus on enhancing diplomatic relations with the largest developing nation in Asia. The increased visa issuance is part of a broader strategy to improve bilateral relations and counterbalance US influence in the region.
