Chief Minister Expands Farmer Benefits with Enhanced Kisan Card Program

Islamabad-(Mudassar Iqbal: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the rollout of the Kisan Card in Punjab within an impressive six-month period. She outlined plans to expand the number of Kisan Cards from 500,000 to 750,000, while offering free laser levelers to farmers managing 12.5 to 25 acres of land.

For those farming over 25 acres, the government will provide free tractors, and agricultural machinery will be available for rent at no profit to support farmers. Additionally, the number of Kisan Card dealers will be increased to 3,000.

Speaking at a ceremony in Hafizabad, the Chief Minister handed out Kisan Cards to farmers and highlighted a Rs 400 billion commitment to Punjab’s agriculture sector. She noted that ten new projects benefiting farmers have been launched within six months, with Kisan Cards worth Rs 150 billion distributed for the first time in Punjab’s history.

“Agricultural and wheat cultivation is on the rise in Punjab. High electricity costs are cutting into farmers’ profits, so I have assigned the task of cultivating vegetables in each city. While others made empty promises, PML-N has taken real action for farmers. Under Nawaz Sharif’s government, the stock market index reached 9,100. My aim is affordable bread and flour for the people, and fair profits for our farmers,” she said.

What is the Kisan Card?
The Kisan Card is issued to registered farmers to help them access various government programs, including subsidies, loans, and insurance. With this card, farmers can conveniently withdraw funds at ATMs or make direct purchases at fertilizer dealer shops.

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) provides comprehensive digital support, handling farmer registrations and managing applications through district offices, as well as maintaining a dedicated dashboard for subsidy requests.

As of June 1, 2024, the Punjab government began registering farmers under the “Chief Minister’s Kisan Card” scheme to offer interest-free agricultural loans.

How Does It Work?
Farmers can apply for a Kisan Card at any HBL Konnect retailer after opening a biometric-enabled mobile account. Once their account is active, they can purchase the Kisan Card bundle for Rs. 500.

The co-branded Kisan Card is then delivered to the local agriculture office within 15-20 days, where farmers can pick it up from the Agriculture Tehsil Office after completing verification.

Who Can Apply?
Eligibility requirements include:
– Farmers owning up to 12.5 acres of land.
– Registration of the farmer’s mobile SIM with their own CNIC.
– Ownership of land verified in the PLRA record.
– No active loans from banks.
