Bus falls into Trishuli River in Nepal, multiple casualties reported

KATHMANDU, NEPAL (Web Desk) – At least 19 people, including a British tourist, were killed after a bus skidded off a mountain road and plunged into the icy Trishuli River in Nepal, authorities said Monday.

The bus was traveling from the tourist city of Pokhara to the capital, Kathmandu, when it fell more than 200 metres (655 feet) into the river in Dhading district during the early hours of Monday morning.

“Out of 44 passengers, 19 died and 25 are receiving medical treatment,” senior police officer Prakash Dahal told AFP, confirming that one of the victims was a British citizen. He added that a Chinese national and a New Zealander were among the injured.

Mohan Prasad Neupane, information officer at the district administration office, said the rescue operation was completed by dawn and that the injured were undergoing treatment.

Nepal has seen similar incidents in the past. In July 2024, two buses carrying over 50 passengers were swept into the Trishuli River after a landslide. Authorities say deadly accidents are relatively common in the Himalayan nation due to poorly maintained roads, unsafe vehicles, and reckless driving.
