Bottle Thrown at Nawaz Sharif During National Assembly Session

The 16th National Assembly commenced its activities with the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected MNAs.

Islamabad: During the inaugural session of the National Assembly on Thursday, an incident occurred where an unidentified individual threw a bottle towards Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Fortunately, the bottle missed Sharif. This incident took place during the Rule of Members’ signature process. Sharif, who returned to the National Assembly after seven years, emerged victorious in the election from NA-130, Lahore, as declared by the Election Commission of Pakistan. He defeated Yasmeen Rashid, an independent candidate backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The 16th National Assembly commenced its activities with the oath-taking ceremony of newly elected MNAs following the general elections held on February 8. Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf administered the oath to the newly elected MNAs. Although the session was scheduled to begin at 10 in the morning, it started after 11.

The NA session began with a commotion after the national anthem, with PTI-backed lawmakers, who have aligned with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), surrounding the speaker’s dias. The PTI had announced prior to the session that they would protest against the alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections. However, after an appeal by the speaker, the lawmakers settled down, and all lawmakers took their oaths.
