Bilawal Rejects Govt’s Proposal to Ban Parties, Urges Dialogue on National Issues

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Saturday strongly criticized the government’s stance on banning political parties, stating that the PPP had not been consulted regarding any such decision. Speaking via video link at the PPP’s foundation day gathering, Bilawal reaffirmed that his party opposed any ban on political groups or the imposition of governor’s rule in any province.

“The government may be considering banning parties with no political role, but PPP is not in favor of such steps,” said Bilawal. He added that the PPP believes in fostering political dialogue, not restricting parties, and emphasized that such actions would damage Pakistan’s democratic progress.

Bilawal also urged the government to take immediate action to address the rising inflation, which he said was causing distress among the public. He raised concerns about certain federal policies, particularly a plan to construct six canals, which he warned could harm national unity. Bilawal called for dialogue with the provinces to address the canal issue, stressing that it could lead to conflict if pushed forward without proper consultation. The PPP leader made it clear that his party would not support the government if the project was pursued “forcefully.”

The PPP chairman also criticized the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government for focusing on threats to the federal government instead of addressing its own internal issues. Bilawal emphasized that the PPP has always acted in Pakistan’s national interest, even during electoral setbacks and when sidelined in political campaigns.

He highlighted several of the party’s key initiatives, including the 18th Amendment and the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which, he claimed, had significantly improved the lives of many Pakistanis.

On national security, Bilawal expressed concern over the resurgence of terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, underlining that all provinces were now feeling its impact. He called for a collective responsibility among all stakeholders to combat terrorism and restore the state’s authority.

In paying tribute to his late mother, Benazir Bhutto, and his grandfather, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Bilawal acknowledged their sacrifices and visionary leadership. He reaffirmed the PPP’s commitment to democratic principles, social welfare, and economic justice, stressing the party’s dedication to ensuring a bright and stable future for Pakistan.

Rejecting any discussions about imposing governor’s rule or banning political parties, Bilawal warned that such actions would hinder democratic progress. He concluded by stating, “The PPP remains committed to a prosperous future for the country.”
