Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister, Announces Sweeping Reform Agenda

London: (Special Reporter) – Andy Burnham has officially become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, pledging a wide-ranging program of reforms aimed at tackling inflation, improving public services, expanding housing, reforming education, and revitalizing the economy.

In his first address to the nation, Burnham said his government would lead Britain toward a “new political and economic model,” promising to restore public trust and strengthen the country’s stability.

Burnham is the seventh UK prime minister in just over a decade. He succeeds Keir Starmer, who resigned only two years after securing a clear parliamentary majority for the Labour Party.

On Friday, Burnham was elected unopposed as leader of the governing Labour Party. Following a brief farewell speech, Starmer formally submitted his resignation to King Charles III, who then invited Burnham to form a new government. Burnham accepted the invitation and officially assumed office as prime minister.

Upon arriving at 10 Downing Street, Burnham was welcomed by government ministers and staff. Addressing the nation, he described his appointment as “not simply a change of government, but a moment of renewed purpose and a new beginning for Britain.”

He stressed that the UK must regain political and economic stability and said the current generation of politicians must deliver better results. Burnham acknowledged growing public frustration with politics and argued that it should focus on solving problems rather than assigning blame.

The new prime minister announced plans to devolve more powers from Westminster to local authorities, giving communities a greater role in decision-making across the country.

Burnham also pledged to introduce a new economic model that would return essential services to public control, support British industry, and launch a new era of industrial development.

He said his government would unveil a 10-year national strategy later this year, outlining long-term development goals and priorities for the next decade.

To address the rising cost of living, Burnham promised immediate measures beginning the following day, adding that details on how the reforms would be funded would be announced soon.

The prime minister also pledged major education reforms to improve employment opportunities for young people, along with increased support for mental health services. He announced plans to build more council homes to tackle the housing crisis and reduce long-term welfare spending.

Among his government’s first directives, Burnham said, would be measures aimed at ending homelessness across the country.

Concluding his speech, Burnham said serving the public would be his government’s highest priority and vowed to dedicate all his efforts to restoring hope, unity, and confidence across the United Kingdom.

Later, Burnham entered 10 Downing Street with his wife, Marie France, where he met staff. His first official task as prime minister will be to appoint a new Cabinet.
