Akshay Kumar Addresses Nationalist Image, Canadian Passport Controversy

Akshay Kumar Clarifies Nationalist Image And Former Canadian Passport Issue

MUMBAI: (Web Desk) – Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar recently spoke about the long-standing debate around his “nationalist hero” image and the controversy linked to his previous Canadian passport while appearing at the India Today Conclave.

During a conversation with journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, the actor was asked whether his choice of films—many centered on patriotism and national security—was a deliberate strategy to shape a patriotic public persona. Movies such as Kesari, Airlift, Baby, and Mission Mangal were mentioned as examples.

Responding to the suggestion, Akshay rejected the notion that he chooses projects to cultivate a particular image.

“I don’t select films to create an image. If a script feels right and I believe in it, I go ahead and do it,” the actor said.

He also addressed the criticism he faced regarding his former Canadian citizenship, explaining that it stemmed from a difficult period in his career. According to him, around 16 to 17 of his films had failed at the box office during that time, prompting him to consider alternative options for the future.

Akshay said a friend in Canada advised him to explore starting a small business there, which eventually led him to acquire a Canadian passport. However, things changed when the few films he still had awaiting release performed well and his career regained momentum.

“I have always had a strong connection with India. I am Indian and will always remain Indian,” he said, emphasizing that his identity has never been defined by his passport.

The actor also noted that he has consistently paid taxes in India despite the criticism, adding that people often focus on one controversy while ignoring other aspects of a person’s life.

On the professional front, Akshay has several upcoming projects. He will next appear in the horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla, directed by Priyadarshan, which is scheduled for release on April 10, 2026.

He is also set to star alongside Saif Ali Khan in the thriller Haiwaan, where he is expected to play a negative role. The film is slated to release in August 2026.

In addition, Akshay has joined the cast of Golmaal 5, directed by Rohit Shetty, marking his first appearance in the popular franchise alongside Ajay Devgn.

Another major project in his lineup is Welcome to the Jungle, the third installment in the successful Welcome franchise, which is expected to release in June 2026.

With several films in the pipeline and continued public debate about his persona, Akshay Kumar remains one of Bollywood’s most prominent and widely discussed actors.
